THE STATE OF HEALTH CARE IN ODISHA
About half of the villages in Odisha do not have medical facilities within a 10 mile distance. Lack of good transportation in the tribal areas makes it difficult to have easy access to healthcare. The shortage of doctors and the lack of other healthcare infrastructure accentuate the problem. In some areas, 80 percent of tribal people engage with witchcraft methods to cure diseases.
Odisha has a high rate of Malaria. Not only does it account for 23 percent of total malaria cases in India, it also accounts for 66 percent of deaths. More than half of the tribal population of Odisha live in these high-risk areas.
VISION INDIA PROVIDES HEALTH CARE
Vision India has been conducting Health Camps during monsoon season for many years. Tribal people have far worse health indicators than the general population due to poverty. Most tribal people are more vulnerable to disease because they live in remote rural areas where there is illiteracy and difficult physical environments. Malnutrition, inadequate access to potable water, and lack of personal hygiene and sanitation are also factors.
Our strategy is to develop health awareness through the voices of the tribals themselves — to convince each other to rethink their deep-rooted myths and take better care of their health. Our goal is not only to increase access to proper healthcare services and medicine, but to provide education that changes attitudes and behaviors so tribes actively choose to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Vision India is grateful to the hands who generously support this noble cause.
